Skate Canada Policies

Helmet Use Policy

Carstairs Skating Club (Skate Canada) requires all CanSkate participants (up to and including Stage 5) as well as all skaters in the CanPowerSkate program to wear a CSA approved hockey helmet while on the ice.  All PreCanSkate participants must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet with a cage while on the ice.  Skaters will not be allowed on the ice without the required helmet.  Bicycle, multi-sport and snowboarding/skiing helmets are not acceptable.

Skate Canada Assumption of Risk

1. ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF INHERENT RISK
I understand that participation in skating, figure skating, and any other sporting activities listed in the
enclosed appendix (hereinafter the “Sports Activity”) is voluntary, and involves inherent risk during
participation, including the risk of possible accidents, physical injury, or exposure to the COVID-19 virus
or other infections or infectious diseases as a result of attending training, club events or competitive
events. I freely accept and fully assume all such risks, dangers and hazards, including but not limited to
personal injury, disease transmission, death, property damage or loss, resulting from my participation. I
have carefully considered the risks involved, and I have full confidence that reasonable precautions will
be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of myself (or my son/daughter/ward).
2. WAIVER
I do for myself (or my child), and our respective heirs, executors, administrators, successors and assigns,
hereby waive, release, and forever discharge Skate Canada and/or Skate Canada: Alberta-Northwest
Territories/Nunavut Association (Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Section), all Regions of Skate
Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Section, Carstairs Skating Club, their officers, partners, agents, employees,
servants, representatives, volunteers, coaches, officials, successors and assigns (the “Representatives”) of
and from any actions, causes of action, complaints, demands and claims or any recourse whatsoever
(“Claims”) that I have or may have in the future in any way connected with my (or my child’s) participation
in the Sports Activity contemplated herein, whether in law or in equity, in respect of personal injury, illness
or disease transmission, loss of life, or property damage of any kind or nature, and I do hereby discharge
the Representatives from any such liability. This includes negligence, breach of contract or breach of any
statutory or other duty of care.
3. INDEMNIFICATION
I further agree to fully indemnify and defend Skate Canada and/or Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut
Section, all Regions of Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Section, Carstairs Skating Cluband any of their
Representatives from and against any and all Claims brought against Skate Canada and/or Skate Canada:
Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Section, all Regions of Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Section, Carstairs
Skating Club and any of their Representatives, including all related costs and expenses, and against any
loss, costs, damages, or expenses which Skate Canada and/or Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut
Section, all Regions of Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Section, Carstairs Skating Club and any of
their Representatives may sustain, suffer, incur, or be liable for resulting from, arising from, or in any way
related to my (or my son/daughter/ward’s) participation in the Sports Activity. I also agree and undertake
not to make any claim or take any proceedings against the Representatives set out above, or any other
person or corporation which might claim contribution or indemnity under the provisions of any statute or
otherwise from the Representatives set out above.
4. SEVERABILITY
The provisions of this Assumption of Risk and Waiver shall be deemed severable and if any provision or portion thereof is held invalid, illegal or unenforceable for any reason, the remainder shall not thereby be
invalidated, but shall remain in full force and effect.

Acknowledgement: I am aware of the nature and effect of this Assumption of Risk and Waiver and I fully
understand all of the terms and conditions above. I understand that I have given up substantial rights by
signing this Assumption of Risk and Waiver and I am signing it freely and voluntarily without inducement.
Parent/Guardian: I certify that I am the parent or legal guardian of the participant named below and that
I am entitled to his or her custody and control. I understand the aforesaid inherent risks that could arise
from these activities, I grant permission for my son/daughter/ward to participate in the Sports Activity
and other activities incidental thereto and I execute this Assumption of Risk and Waiver on behalf of
myself and my son/daughter/ward.

Skate Canada Code of Ethics

This code of ethics applies to all skaters, officials, coaches, employees, board members, volunteers, alumni, and hall of fame members of Skate Canada and its affiliate organizations. This code of ethics also applies to parents and guardians who participate in and observe related activities.

  1. I will conduct myself in a manner that is of the highest standards, follows Skate Canada’s vision and mission, and is athlete-centered.
    1. I will treat all people with respect, dignity, and sportsmanship.
    2. I will act on the belief that the athlete as a person is more important than their success or my success in the sport.
  • I will conduct myself professionally during all interactions in and surrounding Skate Canada activities.
  1. I will use positive discipline that includes setting fair rules, listening, problem-solving, encouraging, and being a good example. I will not use harmful methods such as but not limited to hitting, name-calling, yelling, or using insults, intimidation, or rejection.
  2. I will disclose any conflict of interest and not allow myself to be influenced in a way that could conflict with the best interest of the organization or the organization’s reputation.
  3. I will not engage in behaviour that is intended to wrongfully manipulate the outcome of a competition or test.
  • I will respect the coach/athlete relationship and will not solicit the athlete/s of another coach.
  • I will never engage in any exploitative, abusive, or corrupt relationships. I will always act in a kind and judicious manner.
  1. I will support an inclusive sport for all, regardless of race, ancestry, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, marital status, family status, disability or any other ground of discrimination prohibited by human rights legislation.
  2. I agree to follow the ISU’s Code of Ethics at all hosted and non-hosted ISU events.
  3. I agree to advocate and practice the principles of Safe Sport.
  1. I will not participate in activities that are abusive or criminal. I will also not participate in activities that disrespect human rights or that risk the reputation of Skate Canada.
    1. I will adhere to all federal, provincial, municipal, and host country laws.
    2. I will notify Skate Canada if I face any new related criminal charges, ongoing criminal investigations, convictions, or bail conditions.
  • I will not use my power or authority in an attempt to coerce another person to engage in sexual activity or to participate in unethical and/or criminal activities.
  1. I will not in any way behave sexually with children or youth. This includes but is not limited to the use of sexual jokes, language, and/or names; participation in sexual touching and/or exploitation; the use of, reference to, or participation in pornography.
  2. I will not participate in any form of bullying, harassment, discrimination, physical or verbal abuse, neglect, intimidation, or exploitation.
  3. I will not use technology or social media to disrespect or exploit others.
  • I will not abuse or exploit children or youth in any way and will immediately report to the appropriate authorities and Skate Canada (safesport@skatecanada.ca) if I see or suspect anyone else doing so.
  • I will not possess, use, or promote the use of illegal substances or performance enhancing drugs.
  1. I will follow all of Skate Canada’s bylaws, policies, and rules and commit to reading all amendments and updates at the time of registration and throughout the year.
  2. I will not attempt to cover up or conceal any conduct of an individual that is, or may be, in breach of this Code and will report any violations.
  3. I will fully cooperate with Skate Canada’s investigations.
  4. I understand that a violation of this Code on my part may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from Skate Canada.

Privacy Policy

Skate Canada is committed to protecting the privacy of its employees, contractors, consultants, suppliers, volunteers, registrants (herein referred to as “individual”) and any other confidential business information. The purpose of this policy is to preserve the privacy of the individual and Skate Canada by outlining the obligations and procedures for dealing with personal, privileged and/or confidential information.

This policy applies to all individuals, employees, contractors, volunteers, suppliers, and consultants of Skate Canada or anyone else who is granted access to personal, privileged, and/or confidential information.  

All individuals at one time or another may receive personal, privileged and/or confidential information which may concern other individuals. Individuals are obligated to ensure that personal information to which they may have access remains confidential, is only used for the purposes for which it was collected is not disclosed without authorization or used for personal gain. Any individual who discloses personal information, contrary to this policy will be subject to disciplinary measures.

Individuals are required to follow the 10 Fair Information Principles and procedures regarding the collection, use and disclosure of personal information as set out in this policy.

  1. Accountability: Skate Canada is accountable to those whose personal information comes under its custody for ensuring that their information is protected in a manner consistent with this policy. Accountability for Skate Canada’s compliance with the policy rests with the Safe Sport Director, or delegate.
  2. Identifying Purposes: Skate Canada will identify the purpose for which it collects, uses, and discloses personal information prior to collecting the information. Skate Canada only collects, uses or discloses personal information for purposes consistent with meeting its mandate and core functions.
  3. Consent for Collection, Use or Disclosure: Knowledge and consent of the individual are required for the collection, use or disclosure of identifiable personal information, except where legally permissible. Notice of Collection statement must be communicated to registrants at registration (Appendix A). Knowledge and consent of the individual is not required for the collection, use or disclosure of non-identifiable personal information. Individuals with a direct relationship with Skate Canada may withdraw their consent and can do so by contacting Skate Canada.
  4. Collection: Skate Canada limits the collection of personal information to that which is necessary for the purposes it has identified. Skate Canada collects personal information by fair and lawful means.
  5. Use and Retention: Skate Canada does not use identifiable personal information for purposes other than those identified prior to collection, except with the consent of the individual or as required by law. “Use” includes processing identifiable information in such a way that it is no longer identifiable. Skate Canada allows only authorized staff to access and use specific data holdings of personal information on a “need-to-know” basis, that is, when required to perform their duties. Personal information is retained only as long as necessary for the fulfillment of purposes identified at collection. For purposes of long-term analysis and reporting, Skate Canada may retain personal information permanently. Personal information that is no longer required to fulfill the identified purposes is destroyed, erased, or made anonymous in a secure manner.
  6. Disclosure: Skate Canada may disclose or publish non-identifiable (e.g. aggregated) personal information only, having used reasonable precautions to ensure that individuals cannot foreseeably be identified by linking this information with other information. Skate Canada may disclose identifiable personal information only when: a) the recipient is the data provider that originally provided the identifiable personal information., or b) the disclosure is required by legislation, or c) Skate Canada has obtained the consent of the individuals concerned.
  7. Accuracy: Personal information will be as accurate, complete and up-to-date as necessary for the purposes for which Skate Canada collects, uses or discloses it. Skate Canada updates personal information when necessary to fulfill the purposes for which the information is collected, used or disclosed. Data providers are responsible for ensuring the personal information they provide to Skate Canada is accurate, complete and up-to-date for the purpose specified.
  8. Safeguards: Skate Canada protects personal information with security safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity and identifying nature of the information. The security safeguards protect personal information against loss or theft, as well as unauthorized access, disclosure, copying, use, or modification and will protect personal information that it holds or transmits regardless of the format in which it is held. Care is used in the disposal or destruction of personal information to prevent unauthorized parties from gaining access to the information.
  9. Transparency and Openness: Those whose personal information Skate Canada collects, uses and discloses are entitled to know what Skate Canada’s practices and policies are in connection with this information and to challenge those practices and policies. Skate Canada makes readily available information about its practices and policies in order to promote transparency and explicitness.
  10. Individual Access to and Amendment of Personal Information: Upon request, Skate Canada will inform an individual what identifiable personal information it has collected, used or disclosed about him/her, and from whom it has been collected and to whom it has been disclosed. An individual shall be able to access his or her personally identifiable information, and to have it amended as appropriate, which may include the correction, deletion or addition of information. Skate Canada responds to an individual’s request to amend his or her identifiable personal information within a reasonable time and at minimal or no cost to the individual. 

Individual’s request for disclosure of their own personal information to Third Parties must be accompanied by a completed, signed, and dated Consent and Authorization for the Release of Private Information form providing clear consent to release specific information related to them and providing details on who can receive the information.

Personal information that is no longer required to fulfill the identified purpose will be destroyed or erased within 12 months after its use unless retention of that information is specified by law for certain time periods.  

Notice of Collection

Your privacy and the protection of your personal information is important to us. Your personal information is required to register you with Skate Canada in any capacity, including, without limitation, as a Skate Canada registrant, coach or in connection with your affiliation with a skating club or skating school and to administer various services, such as Skate Canada events. Your personal information may also be exchanged with Skate Canada affiliates which includes your local skating club or skating school or provincial association or section. By submitting this form, you expressly provide your consent to the sharing of your personal information with Skate Canada and as described herein for purposes of registration and receipt of national services delivered by Skate Canada. We adopt the 10 Fair Information Principles into our privacy program, and employ reasonable measures to protect against unauthorized access, processing, disclosure, alteration, destruction or loss of your personal information. Carstairs Skating Club Policies

Refund Policies

  1. CanSkate Season Session (Fall or Winter)

    A skater may withdraw from the CanSkate Fall or Winter session for a full refund prior to the program's start date.  After the program has begun, skaters have up to two weeks to withdraw.  Refunds during the two week period will be a prorated amount based on how many days the skater participated.  If a skater withdraws after the two week period, no refund will be issued.

    The Skate Canada Fee is non-refundable.

    If a skater needs to withdraw from CanSkate for a medical reason and the inquiry is not visual, a medical note may be required.  Refunds due to medical concerns will be prorated based on the number of days skated.  

    Refunds are not provided for closure due to Inclement Weather.

  2.  CanSkate Full Season (Fall and Winter)

    A skater may withdraw from the CanSkate Full Year (Fall and Winter) session for a full refund prior to the program's start date.  After the program has begun, skaters have up to two weeks to withdraw.  Refunds during the two week period will be a prorated amount based on how many days the skater participated.  If a skater withdraws after the two week period, no refund will be issued.

    After the Fall session is complete and prior to the Winter session beginning, families have the opportunity to withdraw from the CanSkate program.  The refund will be half of the full year price. However, if a family withdraws midyear, but has not fulfilled any volunteering or fundraising commitments, $50 will be deducted from the refund.  

    The Skate Canada Fee is non-refundable.

    If a skater needs to withdraw from CanSkate for a medical reason and the inquiry is not visual, a medical note may be required.  Refunds due to medical concerns will be prorated based on the number of days skated.  

    Refunds are not provided for closure due to Inclement Weather.

  3. Modified and Star Skate

    A skater may withdraw from the program at any time. 

    Refunds will be determined based on:

    1. Prorated based on number of dates into or left in the September to March season

    2. Status of account

    3. Status of account with all coaches and partnering person

    4. Volunteering and/or fundraising commitments (if commitments have not been met, it could result in a $50 deduction from refund)

    The Skate Canada Fee is non-refundable.

    If a skater needs to withdraw from skating for a medical reason and the inquiry is not visual, a medical note may be required.  

    Refunds are not provided for closure due to Inclement Weather.  

    If an unexpected closure due to coaching availability or facility issues arises, alternate skating options will be provided. 

    No refunds or make up lessons will be offered for lessons missed due to short-term illness (e.g. colds or flus), vacations, or management disputes.

    No refunds will be provided if the Board of Directors removes a skater for disciplinary reasons. 

    Refunds can take up to 30 days to process and will only be issued to the payee. 

Inclement Weather

  1. The safety of our coaches, parents and skaters is most important.  Carstairs Skating Club will cancel all skating lessons if the forecast temperature that day, with windchill, is minus 45 degrees Celsius or colder.  Cancellation may also occur when there is a heavy snowfall or a blizzard warning is in effect at that time.  Notification of closure will be provided via email and social media.  

    No refunds are given for weather related closures.
